New fables of Aesop 9: One tree of persimmon

 

Once upon a time, there was a tree of persimmon in a valley between two mountains.

Monkeys lived in each mountain peacefully.

昔々、二つの山の間にある谷に一本の柿の木がありました。

それぞれの山には猿達が平和に暮らしていました。

One monkey found the tree of persimmon in the valley.

“ Come autumn, the tree seems to bear splendid fruits.”

However, a monkey of opposite mountain has stared at here.

“ Monkeys of opposite mountain seem to take these.”

一匹の猿が谷の柿木を見つけました。

「こりゃ秋になれば立派な実をつけそうだ！」

ところが向こう山の猿も、こちらをじいっと見詰めていました。

「向こうの猿が採りそうだな！」

This young monkey returned to his group and talked with an elder.

"Is a tree of persimmon in the valleys our thing?"

The elder answered that he didn't know about the old days, and you should not contact with it.

Then a robust monkey that had been hearing it said.

“ Well then, we should prevent his picking persimmons.

この若猿は群れに帰り、長老に相談しました。

「谷の柿の木は、我々のものですよね？」

長老は昔の事は解らないが、関わらない方が良いと応えました。

すると、それを聞いた屈強な猿が言いました。

「それじゃ採られないようにすれば良いじゃないか？」

At first, several monkeys came out from both mountains, and they glared at each other on both sides of the tree of persimmon.

One monkey said at a certain moment.

“ You must not pick these.”

“ In reverse, you really must not pick these.”

The robust monkey said to everybody.

“ Must be not underestimated by them, and everybody must show fighting posture with holding a stick in your hand!”

The elder looking at it rebuked young monkeys.

“ It will become irreparable.”

Before long, young monkeys of two groups with a stick came to face each other all together in the valley.

Then, the battle started in the wake of having given someone's cough.

最初、両方の山から数匹づつの猿が出て来て、互いに柿の木を挟んで睨み合うようになりました。

ある時、一匹が言いました。

「お前ら、採るんじゃないぞ！」

「おまえらこそ採るんじゃないぞ！」

その屈強な猿は皆に言いました。

「舐めらんじゃないぞ！　皆、手に棒を持って戦う姿勢を示せ！」

それを見ていた長老は、取り返しのつかないことになるぞと若猿達をたしなめました。

やがて谷に棒を持った二グループの若猿達が総出で対峙するようになりました。

そして、誰かが咳きをした切っ掛けに戦いが始まってしまいました。

The year, autumn came to the valley.

Nobody ate persimmons, and when it became red ripe, it only fell into the ground.

If look closely, “ Brave man died here.”  It had been written to a mossy monument.

その年、谷に秋が訪れました。

柿の実は誰にも食べられないまま赤く熟しては地面に落ちていくだけでした。

よく見ると、苔むした碑には「勇者、ここに眠る」と書かれていました。

New fables of Aesop 8: tortoise and log

 

Once upon a time, in a place, there was a pond where many tortoises had lived in.

昔々、ある所にたくさんの亀が暮らす池がありました。

Everybody had been living peacefully, but troubled thing was only one.

The reason was because of a small place on where they bask in the sun in peace.

God couldn't bear to see it, and then God floated two logs on the pond.

With delight, tortoises begin to climb it.

It is good when one tortoise is only riding on it.

But if everybody begins to climb it, a log turns turtle immediately.

Then all tortoises fall in the water.

皆、平和に暮らしていたのですが、一つ困ったことがありました。

それは安心して甲羅干しをする場所が小さかったことです。

それを見かねた神様が、池に二本の丸太を浮かべました。

亀達は喜んで、丸太に乗り上がろうとします。

一匹だけが乗っている時は良いのですが。

皆が登り始めると、丸太が直ぐ回転して、亀は皆、水の中に落ちてしまいます。

Soon, while they had been climbing it in competition with each other, emboldened tortoises began a quarrel.

“You are dirty. Because I have climbed it in first, go to another log!”

Even another log was the same.

“ Stupid guy go to another log, and this log is our thing! “

The peaceful pond became the noisy pond because tortoises cursed in each other.

やがて、血気盛んな亀達は、競って登ろうとする内に喧嘩を始めました。

「俺が先に登ったのだから、汚いお前は、もう一つの丸太に行け！」

もう一つの丸太でも同じでした。

「馬鹿な奴はあちらに行け、こちらは俺達のものだ！」

平和な池は罵り合う騒がしい池になりました。

God couldn't bear to see it, and then God said tortoise in the pond.

"I hear a wish of everyone only once again. This is the last.”

Emboldened tortoises ignored it and only had been climbing the logs.

Then one tortoise that dislikes competition said to God.

"Please God tie up two logs with a string"

God granted the request.

Then the competition quite disappeared.

Because two logs were tied up in parallel, it did not turn.

After that time, all tortoise of the pond came to be able to bask in the sun as much as they desired.

見かねた神様は、池の亀に言いました。

「皆、もう一度だけ、望みを聞いてあげる。これが最後だよ。」

血気盛んな亀達は、無視して、丸太を取り合っているだけでした。

すると、一匹の争いを嫌う亀が、神様に言いました。

「どうか二本の丸太を紐で縛っていただけませんか。」

神様はその要望を聞き入れました。

すると、争いはピッタリと無くなりました。

丸太が並行に縛られたので回転しなくなったのです。

この後、池の亀は好きなだけ甲羅干しが出来るようになりました。

New fables of Aesop 7： Two ponds

Once upon a time, a red pond and a black pond were located in line with a ravine.

The red fish lived in red pond and the black fish lived in black pond.

Since the two ponds had not connected, two kinds of fish did not mix.

The character of two kinds of this fish differed greatly.

The black fish always scrambled for food and the stronger fish was eating more food.

As for the strong fish, although the body became large, someone had been injured always.

Therefore, the number was getting fewer gradually.

On the other hand, the red fish divided food among each other, and did not fight for it.

Everyone was small in the same way, and the number did not change.

昔々、山あいに赤池と黒池が二つ並んでいました。

赤池には赤い魚、黒池には黒い魚が住んでいました。

池は繋がっていなかったので、この魚達は混ざり合うことはなかった。

この2種類の魚の性質は大きく異なっていました。

黒い魚は、いつも餌を奪い合い、強い者が多くの餌を食べていました。

強い者は体が大きくなりましたが、いつも誰かが傷付いていました。

そのため数が徐々に減っていました。

一方、赤い魚は餌を仲良く分け合い、争いませんでした。

皆同じように小柄で、その数は変化していませんでした。

A heavy storm came over once, and a flood swallowed the two ponds, and the water went out before long.

Then, several red fish had gone into the black pond.

On the contrary, several black fish also had gone into the red pond.

A red fish in black pond said.

"I cannot find food even if waiting till when, because the black fish deprives. "

At last, every red fish died.

On the other hand, a black fish in red pond said.

" It is easy to take food from red fish. It is a paradise. "

The number of black fish increased, and the number of red fish decreased.

Then the number of both became the same before long.

A black fish said.

"The injury by conflict does not occur by the favor of the red fish."

A red fish said.

“ We thank black fish for protecting us from rowdies, such as a catfish."

ある時、大嵐がやって来て、洪水が二つの池を飲み込み、やがて水が引きました。

すると、数匹の赤い魚が黒池に紛れ込んでいました。

逆に、黒い魚も赤池に紛れ込んでいました。

黒池に紛れ込んだ赤い魚が言いました。

「黒い魚が奪ってしまうので、いつまで待っても餌にありつけない。」

とうとう赤い魚は総べて死んでしまいました。

一方、赤池に紛れ込んだ黒い魚が言いました。

「赤い魚から餌を奪うのは楽だ、ここは天国だ！」

黒い魚は数を増やし、赤い魚は減り、やがて同じ数で釣り合うようになりました。

また黒い魚が言いました。

「赤い魚のおかげで、争いによる怪我が無くなった。」

赤い魚が言いました。

「黒い魚は、ナマズなど乱暴者から身を守ってくれるのでありがたい。」

And time flowed.

All black fish of black pond died out for continual fight.

On the other hand, in red pond, red fish and black fish lived together, and the numbers had been increasing.

They were prosperous because that red fish that take care of each other and brave black fish cooperated.

We are also similar.

In the nation where women's rights were ignored, the civil war is easy to occur.

Even in democratic nation, if woman's social position is low, the nation comes to advance the nuclear power generation easily.

In major power, if woman's social position in the nation is low, the natural increase rate of the population has been decreasing rapidly.

Ensuring equal status between men and women is the first step to make society better.

そして歳月が流れました。

黒池の黒い魚は、絶え間ない争いの為にすべてが死に絶えました。

一方、赤池では、赤と黒の魚が共に暮らし、その数は増えて行きました。

いたわり合う赤い魚と勇猛な黒い魚が協力してこそ繁栄したのでした。

我々も同様です。

女性の立場が押さえられている国ほど内乱が続いています。

例え民主国家でも、女性の社会的地位が低い国ほど原発推進になっています。

主要国で、女性の地位が低い国ほど人口の自然増減率は急激に低下しています。

女性が男性と対等になることが、社会を良くする第一歩です。

New fables of Aesop ５ : monkeys in two valleys

 

Long, long ago in a certain place, there were a black valley and a red valley.

In the past, two groups of monkeys lived in both valleys, but there is nobody in the red valley now.

Let's look back on old times a little.

昔々あるところに、黒谷と赤谷がありました。

かつて猿は両方の谷に住んでいたのですが、今、赤谷には一匹もいません。

少し昔を振り返ります。

  

Once a lot of persimmon trees were in two valleys, and the chestnut trees were less than it.

The monkeys liked the persimmon, because they can easy eat tastily.

Monkeys in the red valley scattered eaten persimmon seeds on the ground.

The red valley became full of the persimmon trees before long.

In autumn, ripe persimmons filled the valley with red color.

The monkeys swore about the monkeys of the black valley.

“They are the stupid guys who do not know the pleasure, because they are growing many distasteful chestnuts despite hardships.”

かつて二つの谷は柿の木が多く、栗の木は少なめでした。

猿は、美味しいくて食べやすい柿の木を好みました。

赤谷の猿達は、食べた柿の種をそこら中に撒き散らしました。

やがて赤谷は柿の木で一杯になりました。

秋になると、赤く熟れた柿が谷を埋めつくしました。

その猿達は黒谷の猿達をののしりました。

「奴らは栗の木を苦労して育てて、楽しみを知らない馬鹿な奴らだ！」

On the other hand, many of monkeys in the black valley were sharing a certain thought.

“We do not reduce the chestnut trees as well as the persimmon trees.”

Regrettably, there were fellow that planted persimmon trees and monopolized persimmons.

However, all together, they cracked down on the transgressor.

They cultivated both of trees so that it may become the same in number.

一方、黒谷の猿達の多くはある思いを共有していました。

「柿の木同様に栗の木を絶やさない。」

残念なことに、柿の実を一人占めにする者や、柿の木をこっそり植える者も絶えませんでした。

しかし皆で、違反者を取り締まり、両方の木をほぼ同数になるように維持し育てました。

The sign of the change has begun to be seen in the red valley before long.

The soil was being infertile from overwork, and then the persimmons have decreased little by little.

However, everybody thought that a good harvest would come sometime soon.

One year, Rain decreased and the persimmon became bad harvest.

In addition, a severe winter came and was a longer interval.

Their foods were exhausted at last.

When spring came, the monkeys disappeared from the red valley once for all.

On the other hand, the monkeys of the black valley were able to eat the preserved chestnut little by little.

Thanks to this, they were able to get over the winter.  

In this way, bright and dark sides of two valleys separated.

A patriarch monkey of the black valley always said.

“If we endure a little now, and make efforts to bring up it, we will not become unhappy in the future.”

やがて赤谷に変化の兆しが見え始めたのです。

無理が祟って地味が弱り、柿の実が少しずつ減って来たのです。

しかし、いずれ豊作が訪れるだろうと、高をくくっていました。

ある年、雨が少なく柿は不作になり、追い打ちをかけるように厳しく長い冬が訪れました。

とうとう食料は尽きました。

春になると赤谷から猿の姿はこれを最後に見えなくなりました。

一方、黒谷では、栗を保存し、少しずつ食べて、その冬を乗り切ることが出来ました。

こうして二つの谷の明暗は別れたのです。

黒谷の長老猿は常日頃、言っていたのです。

「私達は今少し我慢し、育てる努力をすれば、将来不幸になることが無い。」

New fables of Aesop 4 : pigeon and hawk

 

Once upon a time, two islands were floating on a north sea.

The pigeon had lived on one island, and the hawk had lived on the other island.

遙か昔、北の海に二つの島が浮かんでいました。

一つの島にはハトが、他方にはタカが暮らしていました。

 

In a certain year, because it snowed most early, nuts and small animals decreased dramatically.

The hawk was troubled by famine, and then became attacking the pigeon of the neighboring island.

その年は雪が早く降って木の実が少なく、リスなどの小動物が激減した。

タカ達は餌に困り、隣の島のハトを襲うようになりました。

The pigeon also was also troubled by hunger.
Since pigeon’s fellows became to be attacked by the hawk, they gathered to discuss by all members.

“ Even if we fight, never get a chance of victory. We have hidden in holes, and must wait till good time. ”

Many of birds with a family have thought so.

“ An attack is the greatest defense. We should fight bravely all together. “

When a young man spoke like it, the place soon filled with extraordinary excitement.

Anybody was not able to propose other opinion, and then the pre-emptive strike was decided.

“ We cannot survive by hiding or battling. Once, we have seen the bird dancing in the southward sky in the distance. We should leave toward south far. “

Some birds have felt sure of it.

ハト達も飢えに苦しんでいました。

仲間が襲われるようになったので、皆で話し合いました。

「戦っても勝算はない。穴に隠れて時の過ぎるのを待つべきだ。」

家族を持つ者達の多くはそう思っていました。

「攻撃は最大の防御である。皆で団結し勇敢に戦うべきだ。」

若者が発言すると、やがてその場はその熱情に沸き立って行きました

他の案は沈黙せざるを得ず、先制攻撃が決まりました。

「戦うことも隠れることも勝算はない。遠く南の空に舞う鳥を見ることがある。南を目指し旅立つべきだ。」

一部の者は、確信していました。

The day of execution came at last.

A group of the brave pigeons flew in early morning toward the island of hawk.

There was a group of the pigeon that flew toward southern sky a little late.

At last, the birds disappeared from both islands mostly.

Then, many years passed.

Migratory birds have come to visit the island of pigeon only in summer.

The birds that eat fish have only lived in the island of hawk.

The birds are the posterity of birds that escaped the battle and took another selection those days.

とうとう決行の日が訪れました。

勇敢なハトの一団は朝早く、タカの島を目指し飛び立ちました。

少し遅れて、南の空に向かって飛び立つハトの一団がありました。

ついに両方の島からほとんど鳥はいなくなりました。

それから月日は流れました。

ハトの島には渡り鳥が夏だけ飛来するようになりました。

タカの島では魚を食べる鳥だけが暮らすようになりました。

その鳥達は、当時、戦いを逃れて別の選択をしたものの子孫だったのです。

Since family love and brotherly love blazes up, people become bravery, but reckless.

Probably, selection of battle evasion will be important although it is accompanied by courage and wisdom, difficulties.

家族愛、同胞愛は激しく燃え上がり、人を勇敢にもし、無謀にもします。

戦い回避の選択は智恵と勇気、苦労を伴うが、重要でしょう。

New fables of Aesop 3： a zebra and a lion

 

＜　Mother and child of a lion　＞

Once upon a time, the family of a zebra and a lion lived in the large prairie separately.

The male of a lion has a sharp fang and nail, and rich mane, and is brave obviously.

A uniquely important role of lion’s male is protecting a family from other males and enemies, and this battle in many cases injures him.

The female of the lion is always accompanied by her several children, and only she performs child-rearing and hunting.

When hunting, two or more females carry out in a group.

A lion’s male monopolizes the kill, and the females and children divide the remainder mutually with later.

In the same way as the lion, one male zebra live with the children and many females as one family.

A difference is that the family of a zebra makes a still bigger group, and the family is always living together with the male.

昔々、広い草原にシマウマとライオンの家族が別々に暮らしていました。

ライオンの雄は鋭い牙と爪、豊かなたてがみがを持ち、見るからに勇壮です。雄の唯一重要な役割は、他の雄や敵から家族を守ることで、この闘いで傷を負うことは多い。

雌は数匹の子供をいつも連れており、育児と狩りは雌が行います。狩りをするときは複数の雌が集団で行います。その獲物を１匹の雄が独占し、後で雌と子供達がおこぼれを分け合うことになります。

ライオンと同様にシマウマも、１頭の雄のもとに多くの雌とその子供達が一つの家族として暮らしています。違いは、シマウマの家族はさらに大きな群れを作り、いつも雄とその家族が一緒に暮らしていることです。

A child of the lion murmured at a certain time.

"Why doesn't my father hunt?  Why does ｍｙ father plunder a mother's prey?"

His mother said.

"Your father is great. Your father is protecting everybody from the fearful enemy. "

The father who was taking a nap in the distance said with yawning.

"... Ah-.. Ah-.. If you also become strong, it will not have trouble in food."

ある時、ライオンの子供がつぶやきました。

「なぜ父さんは狩りをしないの？　なぜ父さんは母さんの餌を横取りするの？」

母さんは言いました。

「父さんは偉いのよ、怖い敵から皆を守ってくれているのよ」

遠くで昼寝をしていた父さんはあくびをしながら言いました。

「・・・アー・・アー・・。お前も強くなれば、餌に不自由することはないぞ」

At the distant place, a child of the zebra said in a chagrined voice.

“Since my father is not strong, we are attacked by the lion. I am sad..”

His mother said.

" Although your father and mothers are weak, you are protected by uniting many fellows. We carefully bring up you all one by one."

His father who was in the side talked.

I cannot win that powerful fang.　 However, the male of a lion suffer injuries, and the female is thin. The malnutrition child cannot live for a long time. As we enclose the children all together, we are eating grasses without prejudice."

Long years have passed since then. Tens of thousands of zebra was eating grasses on prairie.

On the other hand, it became only that a few lions live within tens km.

離れた場所で、シマウマの子供が悔しそうに言いました。

「父さんが強くないから、私達はライオンに襲われる、悲しいな・・」

母さんは言いました。

「父さんも母さん達も弱いけど、多くの力を合わせて身を守り、私達は一人づつ大事に子育てしているのよ」

隣にいた父さんが話しかけました。

「あの強い牙には勝てないね。しかし見てごらんライオンの雄はけがだらけだし、雌は痩せている。栄養の足らない子供は長くは生きられないよ。私達は皆で子供を囲うようにして、分け隔てなく餌を食べているよ」

それから長い年月が経ちました。草原には溢れんばかりの数万頭のシマウマが草を食べていました。一方、ライオンは数十ｋｍ内に数頭しかいなくなりました。

There is such a situation also in our world.

The country that improves woman's advance in society is together high level of a living standard and the human development index of the United Nations

Although the Japanese woman's academic level and health are excellent, they are still discriminated against by labor conditions.

There is a problem especially after marriage and childbirth, and the woman's working opportunity is unequal, and woman's wages are pressed low.

This further advances an aging of society and low economic growth by a decrease in population.

The critical issue is that the female’s freedom to choose the occupation is restricted.

私達の世界にもこのような状況はあります。

生活水準が高く、国連の人間開発指数も共に上位を占める国は概ね女性の社会進出が進んでいます。日本女性の教育水準と健康面では優れていますが、就労差別が目立ちます。特に結婚と出産後に問題があり、就労機会が不平等で低賃金に押さえられています。

このことは人口現象による高齢化と低経済成長をさらに進めます。一番の問題は、女性の職業選択の自由が制限されていることです。

New fables of Aesop ２： a hairy caterpillar and a green caterpillar

＜　a hairy caterpillar and a green caterpillar　＞

Once upon a time, the green caterpillar ate herbal leaves and lived in the prairie at the foot of a mountain.

It became butterflies soon, someone moved to the big trees by the side of a mountain, and ate the leaf.

Although the leaf of trees was hard, there were abundantly foods.

From grass someone said. "Why does it eat hard leaves?"

Someone replied from trees. "Since it became narrow there, we refrained from there."

The birds that got to know that many caterpillars lived came flying in great numbers.

However, the birds concentrate in trees and began to eat.

It is because birds were not able to stop at soft grass.

Then, the persons of trees are clothed in a poisonous prickle on the body, and were prevented from eating it.

In this way, they became hairy caterpillars in trees.

昔々、山麓の草原で、草の葉を食べて暮らしている青虫が住んでいました。

やがて蝶になって,あるものは山側の大きな樹木に移り、その葉っぱを食べました。

樹木の葉は固いのですが、そこには食料が豊富にありました。

草から誰かが言いました。「なぜ固い葉っぱを食べるの。」

樹木から誰かが返事しました。「そちらが狭くなったので私達は遠慮したのさ。」

ある日、青虫がたくさんいることを知った鳥たちが大挙して飛来しました。

ところが鳥たちは樹木に住んでいる者たちを集中して食べ始めたのです。

なぜなら鳥たちは柔らかい草に留まってついばむことが出来なかったからです。

そこで樹木の者たちは毒のある棘を体に纏い、食べられないようにしたのです。

こうして樹木に付くものは毛虫となったのでした。

One day, the children of the village came for play there.

" These caterpillar become a beautiful butterfly. It is pleasure. "

“There are hairy caterpillars. Since they have poisonous, I will step and crush them."

Voice has been heard from the grassy place. "The hairy caterpillars are pitiful, they did these best in order to survive."

ある日、里の子供たちが遊びにやって来ました。

「この青虫は綺麗なアゲハチョウになるよ、楽しみだね。」

「こんな所に毛虫がいるよ、毒があるから踏みつけてしまおう。」

草むらから小さな声が聞こえて来ました。「毛虫さんは生き残る為にがんばったのに、かわいそうだね。」

The example that ought to become hairy caterpillars is looked at by many histories of a race.

It seems that, when the race that continued being invaded from the circumference, their grudge and self-consciousness become strong.

Jews continued being invaded and segregated from the neighboring country or other races during about 3500.

The same might be said of the Korean Peninsula and Vietnam.

Both countries continued receiving invasion of a major nation for 2000 years.

Thailand and Switzerland are in the opposite poles, may resemble a green caterpillar.

Both countries have protected by the mountain range from the major nation.

We need to refrain from judging the high and the low only by racial appearance.

毛虫にならざるをえない例は多くの民族史に見られます。

周辺から侵略され続けた民族には怨念や自意識が強くなるようです。

イスラエル（ユダヤ人）は約３５００年もの間、隣国や他民族から侵略・差別され続けた。

朝鮮半島とベトナムも同様でした。

両国はそれぞれ２０００年間、大国の侵略を受け続けました。

対極にあるのがタイとスイスで、青虫に似ている。

両国は大国から山脈で守られている。

それぞれの民族を外見だけで貴賤を論じるのは慎むべきです。
