False rumor, prejudice, and blind spots 17: What does the satire aim at? 3

< 1.  Movie "Harakiri" , this is honorable punishment for samurai. >

This time, I consider honor and think about how there should be satire.

< 2.  Fight a duel for honor >

The most troublesome one is "honor".
There is society that esteems "honor" extremely, and if disgrace was brought, it may become a bloodshed incident.
In a memoir “The Sad Tropics” by Levi-Strauss, there was an incident when Brazilian hunter-gatherer bartered.
They made a night attack to protect the honor because the value of the barters was different.
In the past, if disgrace was brought, it is usual for them to behave violently or to fight a duel.

But there was also a different part to the honor in Japan and Korean Peninsula.
A warrior (samurai) did suicide (harakiri) to protect honor of oneself, his family or his belonging group.
There is also society that sacrifices family's woman for family's honor in South Asia.

The response to honor is various and person among different cultures is difficult to understand.
The honor had a function that maintains the footing by maintaining the reputation of individual and his belonging group.
Most society attaches importance to the honor of either individual or group.
For the most part, Europe and America seems to be the former and Japan seems to be the latter.

The culture of the honor still breathes.
The feelings remain still in the competition between nations, races and religions as seen in watching sports.
For exampledo you wish to stare the eyes of gangster, motorcycle gang and Japanese monkey?
We have the feelings that are hard to abandon.

< 3.  Japanese monkey >

What is the problem?
The problem is to hurt the honor of others by satire.
"Freedom of speech" is limited by the range that does not conflict with "Defamation of character".
Furthermore, we should forbid using satire to discriminate against the weak.
In Japan, most media controls discrimination terms voluntarily.

If culture or religion is different, the harm by satire may be beyond imagination.
Frequently, we are easy to accept freedom of speech, separation of government and religion and individualism as holy writ, but should accept different culture.

Most worrying is increasingly to report satirical news with pandering to public as public position "freedom of speech”.

< 4. this cartoon of France shows powers that took aim at the Korean

Summary

The satire is necessary as a degassing of society and a countermeasure against power.
But, the satire is easy to appeal to public, if we give a loose rein to it, we make discriminating run out of control.

When satirizing other countries, the media should exercise moderation.
In addition, it is the same kind as about emigrants of different culture or pagan.
Even if all live in the same country, it is not wise policy to let the manners and customs of the country obey the emigrants hastily.
Naturally, there is the range of good sense like the difference in men and women of all ages.

Developed countries that have a superior sense of “democracy and human rights awareness” must give an example for leading the peace.

False rumor, prejudice, and blind spots 16: What does the satire aim at? 2

< 1. Comic drama >

I look at Asian satire culture and negative aspect of satire this time.

Asian satire

The satire of classic public entertainment (comic drama, comic monologue, etc.) poked fun at the stupidity of person, and admonished.
Occasionally, samurai and Buddhist monk were satirized with caricature.
However, the culture to bitingly satirize the power like Europe and America did not grow up in Japan.

< 2.  Asian satire
E :  Picture scroll “Choju-Jinbutsu-giga” in about the 12th century.
This caricature described by frolicking animals and humans satirizes the society.
The scene shows a rabbit carries the appropriate gift to a bishop of monkey who had finished a Buddhist memorial service.

F :  A caricature "Intractable disease treatment" of the end of the Edo era in the middle the 19th century.
The scene shows some samurais who suffered from intractable disease are visiting a skilled physician.
These diseases are “all talk and no action”,” unprincipled” andcowardice”, etc.
It says samurai is flaccid.

G :  Comic monologue.
It is an entertainment of common people from the Edo era, and also popular even now.
The laugh is mainly to satirize common people’s stupid act.

H :  A masque of Hahoe Folk Village in Korea.
The scene satirizes Buddhist monk that is courting woman.
And it also satirizes Yangban (noble) living in same village.

< 3.  impromptu comedy play of Hakata >

Negative aspect of satire

It is to laugh at and to look down others.
Frequently, the satire was preoccupied with poking fun at others and enjoying, and sometimes was used for social sanctions and discrimination.
Aristotle assumed the origin of Greek comedy had been to poke fun at nomadic tribe who were driven from the town.

In the Middle Ages of Japan, Satirical sanction was carried out in villages.
For example, when there was a theft, village people identified someone with the criminal.
Then, the village people putted a large rock on front of his house at midnight, and did not remove it until he confessed.

In other village, people satirized a delinquency of the villager with impromptu comedy play.
The satirical sanction had functioned as social sanction, but became outdated when legal system and human rights awareness advanced.

Main problem is satire used to despise and discriminate subordinate person and an outlander (immigration).

To satirize different culture
Satire will be common in identical cultural sphere, but in different cultural sphere, there is a possibility that a harmful influence beyond each other’s understandings arises.
I look at two examples about differences in culture, and consider what become problems.

< 4. Honor and laughter >

I :  A scene of charging in drama "Chushingura"
This is a Japanese true story of the early 18th century, and if many Japanese see this drama, they still shed tears.
It shows a samurai’s honor that they took revenge for their lord and suicided by disembowelment.

J :  Folktale ”Khoja”
It is a funny story that a Turkish saint is central character in.

Honor and laughter

These are in common in the world, but the reaction greatly varies according to the culture.
In my trip of Turkey, I heard the funny story ”Khoja”, but it was not laughable.
The local guide said Japanese never laugh, but I asked to speak forcibly.
After all the difference of culture was big.

On the next time, I look at honor.

Preface

Recently, for continuing terrorism threat, I become a dark mood.
It is legitimate to deal terrorism, but about the destruction, there are two consciousnesses.
The one is to exterminate the stronghold by air strikes at one sweep.
Another one is to prevent the recurrence and the increase by snuffing out hotbeds of terrorism.
This time, I don’t examine the pros and cons of the two, and I look back on the satire culture that caused this terrorism.

The threshold of the incident
This weekly newspaper (Charlie Hebdo) was famous with the bitter caricature, and was caricaturing prophet Muhammad from before.
Furthermore, on the day of the incident, a caricature (weekly newspaper) that made a mock of the face of a jihadist having an automatic rifle was released.
There, too, “There was not yet an attack at all in France”, and “ Wait!  It will be still in time for a greeting of the New Year” were trumpeted in the headlines.

About satire

Satire is always accepted by people in the world and has been welcomed.
The satire had the effect to punish the bad practice of society, or the abused power.
But there is also a pitfall where we don't notice.
We glance at the satire culture of the world and intend to consider what it aimed.

The visible side from the satire culture of the world
In a dictionary, “ Satire is to criticize a defect and a sin of society or person indirectly”

< 3.  Actor statue wears a mask of ancient Greece comedy >

Ancient Greece comedy
In the 5 – 4 century B.C., it was very popular with citizen as well as the tragedy of the festival.
The actors exchanged words of the barnyard joke and the ridicule in early times.
At its peak, a person of power or Socrates were satirized, moreover the pacifism was treated by work, "Lysistrata".
This presentation expense was paid by rich merchants and the nation, and we can see a democratic aspect that people were tolerant of satire.

Euramerican satire
It was from the about 17th century that satirists began to play an active part in Europe, and the satire became the weapon of people.
This satire criticized the stupidity and the error of a society or a person of power, and evoked big sympathy in people's mind.
This enlightenment means to people were very strict for a person of power and politicians.
In this sense, it is said that the satire (freedom of speech) toward power is the democratic cornerstone.
