Today, I introduce the film ”the other
son” that was filmed on location in Israel and Palestine.
This film asks what the ethnic battle is
through a bond of parent and child.
今日は、イスラエルとパレスチナで撮影された映画「もうひとりの息子」を取り上げます。
この映画は親子の絆を通して民族紛争とは何かを問いかける。

Summary of the film
-Production-
It was made in France in 2012.
-Contents-
This story opens with two families of
Israel and Palestine surrounded by separation barriers.
The Middle East conflict between a Jew and
an Arab continues for half a century.
Giant Israel strengthens the racial
discrimination, and weak Palestine increases hatred.
Still the two families were living happily.
One day, the parents know that there was an
accident at the time of the birth of their sons.
It brought two families conflicted feeling,
but before long two sons became ..…

―内容―
イスラエルと分離壁で囲まれたパレスチナの二つの家族によって話は展開する。
半世紀にわたるユダヤ人とアラブ人の泥沼の中東紛争がある。
強者イスラエルは人種差別を強固にし、弱者パレスチナは憎悪を募らせるばかりです。
それでも二つの家族は幸せに暮らしていた。
そんなある日、息子の誕生時に事故があったことを両親は知る。
それは家族に葛藤をもたらすが、やがて二人の息子は・・・・。

Israeli Joseph in the right side, and
Palestinian Yacine in the left side.
Central photo: a beginning scene of the film.
After this, Joseph takes an examination for
conscription, and the accident at the time of his birth becomes clear.
Lower photo: their parents.
Joseph’s parents in the left side, and
Yacine’s parents in the right side.
For the first time, they know the facts
that Yacine and Joseph was mixed up at the time of their birth in a hospital.

この後、ヨセフは徴兵検査を受け、誕生時の事故が明らかになる。

Yacine returned home from studying in
France.
He received an inspection by Israeli
military and came back to his home in the separation barrier.
There were parents, an older brother, and a
younger sister welcoming him.
ヤシンはフランス留学から帰国した。
彼はイスラエル軍の検問を受け、分離壁の中の我が家に帰って来た。
そこには温かく迎える両親や兄、妹がいた。
＜ 5. Joseph ＞
＜ ５．ヨセフ ＞
Joseph has enjoyed a freedom before his
conscription and has lived with a family happily.
By the accident that mixed up them, his
parents became not only other persons but also he suddenly belonged to fighting
enemy.
Furthermore, he lost his religious identity
because his mother was not a Jew.
Even if he desired to be a Judaist, the
rabbi pronounced that he could not be it.
Then he passes through a checkpoint, and
goes to meet his biological family of Palestine.
ヨセフは徴兵前の自由を楽しみ、家族と幸せに暮らしていた。
取り違え事故によって、両親が他人であるだけでなく、自分は争う敵の一員になった。
さらに母がユダヤ人で無いことは、ヨセフから宗教的アイデンティティーを奪い取った。
ラビは、彼が望もうがユダヤ教徒ではありえないと宣告した。
そして彼は検問所を通り、血のつながったパレスチナの家族に逢いに行く。

＜ ６．ヤシンの家族 ＞
Yacine’s family is invited from Joseph’s
family, and they go in Israel.
The older brother of Yacine refused to go
to Israel that he should hate.
ヤシンの家族はヨセフの家族から招待を受けて、イスラエルに入る。
ヤシンの兄は、憎むべきイスラエルに行くことを拒否した。

Each parent and older brother agonizes for
anger against enemy and despair, but each mother recognizes this fact before
long.
Two sons have a conflicted feeling with the
bond of parent and child, but they become friends while they are looking for
identity in adverse country.
One day, Joseph is stabbed by a ruffian at
a shore of Israel, and he come into hospital.
The older brother (biological brother) of
Yacine and Yacine came to visit Joseph.
Yacine: “I called your parents. They
are coming.”
Joseph:
“ My parents? Which ones?”
The film ends here.
互いの両親と兄は敵への怒りと絶望で苦悶するが、やがて母親らはこの事実を受容していく。
息子達は、親子の絆に葛藤しながらも、アイデンティティーを互いの国に探し求める内に、仲良くなって行く。
ある時、ヨセフがイスラエルの海岸で暴漢に刺され入院することになる。
そして、ヤシンとヤシンの兄（ヨセフの血縁の兄）が見舞いに来た。
ヤシン：「私は君の両親を呼んだ、すぐに来るよ！」
ヨセフ：「私の両親？ どちらかな？」
ここで映画は終わる。

Sentiments
This film carefully describes "love of
the family" happening in maelstrom of the intense ethnic antagonism.
The accident of mixed up babies comes to break
the reliability of a source of conflict.
How much meaning does the difference of
race and religion that creates the hatred between Jew and Arab have?
This film shows that there is a hope in the
Middle East conflict.
感想
この映画は、激しい民族対立の渦中で起こる「家族の愛」を丁寧に描いている。
一つの赤子の取り違え事故が、両者対立の信憑性を突き崩すことになる。
ユダヤ人とアラブ人の憎悪の根にある宗教や民族の違いはどれほどの意味があるのだろうか。
この映画は今の中東紛争にも希望があることを示している。
