I saw how Buddha statues had evolved into Asia so far.

After this, I will see how Buddha statues were born in India.

Nara prefecture is the birthplace of Japanese Buddha statue, and a lot of Buddha statues of the oldest layer remain.

I introduce Gakkō Bosatsu (bodhisattva) that is a Yakushi Nyorai trinity of early splendid Buddha statues.

奈良は日本の仏像発祥の地で、最古層の仏像が多く遺っています。

２．      The philosophizing statues of Miroku Bosatsu / 思索する菩薩像

I see Miroku Bosatsu statues (Maitreya) that give off an aura of Buddhism.

From it, it is visible how the Buddha statue has spread into Asia.

仏教らしさを漂わせる弥勒菩薩半跏思惟像を見ます。

そこからは仏像がどのようにアジアに伝播したかが見えて来ます。　

３．       The changes of the Japanese Buddha statue / 日本の仏像の変遷

We look at the change that Buddha statue was becoming sophisticated for around 500 years from when it was introduced into Japan.

仏像が日本に始めて伝わってから５００年程かけて、如何に洗練されていくかを見ます。

この地は、大乗と小乗仏教、さらにはヒンドゥー教が影響し合い、独特の仏像を作りだしました。

６．       Buddha statue of a fearful face / 恐い顔の仏像　

I introduce Four Heavenly Kings and Kongorikishi in Japan.

I realized something depending on comments in my blog that were written by person of Africa and US.

The fearful face that I thought natural was exceptional in the eyes of the world.

In later 9-12 episodes, I investigate the difference of Buddha statue expression between Korea and Japan, and the reason of the fearful face.

Although Buddha and bodhisattva are central Buddha statues, there are many kinds of other Buddha statues, and they are adored and are collecting faith.

如来と菩薩は中心的な仏像ですが、他に多くの種類の仏像があり、慕われ信仰を集めています。

I approach the difference in Buddha statues expression.

I introduce the Wisdom King (Myouou) that is like an originator of fearful face, the statue that attains to the extreme of realistic representation, and the statue that is also adored widely in present day, etc.

＜　1.  Osaka Bay is seen beyond flowers ＞

　

I looked at the circumference from a highland in northern Awaji Island.

Here is a flowerbed blooming beautifully at every season, its name is Hanasajiki.

We can look around the neighboring seas and mountains from here.

淡路島北部の高原から周囲を眺めました。

ここに花さじきがあり、季節毎に美しい花を咲かせる花壇があります。

ここからは周囲の海、山が見渡せます。

The right side of the photo is Kitan Strait, and becomes south side.

写真の右側は紀淡海峡で、南側になります。

The mountain is the north end of the ridge of Awaji Island.

この山は淡路島の尾根の北端です。

Shodoshima is seen faintly to right hand side on the sea.

この海は瀬戸内海で、右側に微かに小豆島が見えます。

Unluckily, the weather of that day changed suddenly and clouds increased, although it was comparatively warm.

この日は、あいにく天気が急変し雲が多くなりましたが、比較的暖かかった。

＜　1.  a Renoir picture   　＞

Our vision has a splendid image-processing function.

The astonishing skillful processing coexists with an optical illusion arising from it in our brain.

私達の視覚は、素晴らしい画像処理機能を持っています。

そこには驚くべき巧妙な処理とそれに由来する錯覚が共存しています。

The color was important to the picture of Renoir of impressionist art.

On the other hand, the outline was important to the Ukiyoe print of Utamaro.

For example, I assume there is a white plate on a white table.

For us, high cognitive capacity is necessary to recognize this plate is different from the table.

I introduce two kinds of image processing functions of helping it.

Now, it is always working in your brain, also while you are reading this blog.

印象派のルノアールの絵には、色が重要でした。

一方、歌麿の浮世絵には輪郭線が大事でした。

例えば、白色のテーブルの上に白い皿が置いてあったとします。

この皿を別物と認識するには高度な認知能力が必要なのです。

それを助ける画像処理機能を2種類紹介します。

今あなたが、このブログを読んでいる時も常に脳でそれは働いています。

＜　3.  Structure of eyes and the retina 　＞

＜　4.  optical illusion by lateral inhibition of retinal cell 　＞

Please see the monochrome gradation of Fig. 4.

You seem to see that there are belts at the part of four arrows.

It does not really exist, but the retinal cell automatically emphasizes the boundary (a change of brightness) as shown in Fig. 3 and the right of Fig. 4.

This extracts a boundary and a characteristic from miscellaneous external world information and raises our cognitive ability.

Furthermore, we can recognize a figuration of the thing that presses our skin, and hear voice from within noise.

図４の白黒のグラデーションを見て下さい。

矢印の部分に帯があるように見えるはずです。

それは実際には存在しないのですが、図３の網膜細胞が自動的に境界（明度の変化）を際立せるのです。

図４の右図にその機構が説明されている。

これが、雑多な外界情報から輪郭や特徴を抽出し認知能力を高めているのです。

さらに私達は皮膚を圧迫する物の形や、雑音から聞きたい声を聞き分けることが出来るのです。

You would choose a left person because appearing white more.

This is an optical illusion.

This vision capability that was obtained in evolution plays an important role.

あなたは左の人をより色白と選ぶでしょう。

これは錯覚なのです。

進化で得られたこの視覚機能も重要な役割を果たしています。

＜　6.  I put a picture that was cut from the left into the right　＞

After all, left and right was same complexion.

For example, it seems that you are asked to take a white coffee cup.

Probably, without vision capability described above, you would overlook a gray cup in a gloomy cupboard.

In practice, the cup appears gray because it is in the faint light, but looks whiter with being emphasized.

Our brain automatically rectifies the light and shade difference in the field of vision to enable the constant recognition.

It seems that the image processing is performed in V4 of Fig. 7.

結局、左右同じ肌色だったのです。

例えば、あなたが「白いコヒーカップを取って下さい」と頼まれたとしましょう。

もし先ほどの視覚機能がなければ、あなたは薄暗い食器棚にある灰色のカップを見過ごしたでしょう。

実際は、光量が少なく灰色に見えるカップを、より白く強調して見ることになるのです。

私達の脳は、恒常的な認知を可能にするために、視野内の明暗差を自動で補正しているのです。

その画像処理は図７のV４で行われているようです。

＜　7.  role allotment of visual cortex in cerebral rear　＞

The visual information of an object that came from retina goes into V1 first.

Subsequently, the information of the space and the movement of the object are processed in order of a blue arrow in upper part.

On the other hand, the information of the shape (silhouette) and the color of the object are processed in order of a dark blue arrow in bottom part.

In this way, the visual information is divided into each element and it is performed hierarchically.

In every hierarchy, it is processed under the influence of memorized pictures (ball etc.), languages (apple etc.), and also consciousness or sentiment (hunger etc.).

物体の視覚情報は最初に網膜からV1に入る。

次いで物体の空間・運動の情報は上側青い矢印の順に処理される。

一方、物体の形（輪郭）・色情報は下側紺の矢印の順に処理される。

視覚は、このように情報を各要素に分けられ階層的に行われる。

その階層毎に、記憶されている画像（球など）と言語（リンゴなど）、さらに意識と感情（空腹など）の影響を受けて処理される。

Is it a jar or two faces?

Our cognition is carried out under the influence of preconception and sentiment in addition to cognitive function (image processing) that we are not conscious of.

We look at the sentiment next time.

This mountain faces the Sea of Japan at the northern tip of Korea, and it is famous for autumn leaves.

Here is a village of Yangban(the aristocracy of Joseon Dynasty), and it maintains in original state.

It is a world heritage, and also famous for a masque.

ここは世界遺産でもあり、仮面劇でも有名です。

I approach the culture and mysterious scenes of this village.

This masque shows irony, and has a unique flavor.

ここの仮面は風刺が効いて味わいがあります。

I introduce delicious local dishes of Daegu, Andong, Mt.Seoraksan, and Seoul.

I especially introduce the meal of a fisheries market in Seoul.

美味しかった大邱、安東、雪岳山、ソウルの名物料理を紹介します。

７．      Beomeosa (Temple of the Nirvana Fish)  /   梵魚寺

Because this temple was not aimed at sightseeing, I was able to feel the religious faith that had been rooted in local.

This is a big typical temple, and therefore we are well able to understand the atmosphere of Korean Buddhist temple.   

この寺は観光向けではないだけに、地元に根付いた信仰を感じることが出来ました。

ここは大きな寺で、韓国仏教寺院の雰囲気が良くわかります。

The society and the information 24: Wonder of brain and nerves 2

 

＜　1. brain ＞

We look at an information system of sense and movement in brain.

感覚と運動の情報システムを見ます。

＜　2.  the function of brain　＞

The splendid control system

For example, I assume you lift a boiling kettle.

You touch the handle with confirming it by eyes, and lift it along with grasping so that it may not incline.

At this time, the motion of the hand and the arm were continuously controlled with the feedback control of hot water quantity in the kettle, or an incline of it.

When you touched the heated handle of the kettle, at once you will let go of your hold on it.
If you are carrying it, you will carry it to the neighborhood with being prepared for your burn. 

At this time, the former was a reflex reaction before going into your brain.

As for the latter, the advanced processing was done in brain, because you will suffer a big burn in your feet, when you let go of your hold on it.

Probably, when being holding the kettle, even if someone speaks to you, you will be able to complete also the work while talking.

素晴らしい制御システム

例えば、あなたが沸騰したヤカンを持ち上げるとしましょう。

あなたは目で確認しながら取っ手に触れ、握りながら傾け無いように持ち上げます。

この時、やかんの湯量や傾きの感覚情報を連続的に帰還制御し手と腕を動かしていた。

もしあなたが熱いヤカンの取っ手に触れた時、とっさに手を放し、もし運搬途中なら、火傷覚悟で近くまで運ぶでしょう。

この時、前者は脳に入る前の反射的な反応をした。

後者は、もしそこで手を放せば、足などに大きな火傷を負うことになると脳内で高次の処理がなされた。

もしヤカンを持っている時、誰かがあなたに話しかけても、会話をしながら作業が出来たでしょう。

＜　3. a flow of the information processing　＞

* The input information is processed at multiple levels in a number of cerebral fields.

On the other hand, as for an emergency and everyday repetition movement, it is performed reflectively before going to the brain.

* Much control is carried out without being conscious, and if needed, you can do it consciously. 

＊     入力情報は脳の複数の分野で重層的に処理される。一方、緊急時と日常的な繰り返し運動は脳に入る前に反射的に行われる。

＊     多くの制御は意識せずに行われ、必要に応じて意識して行うことも可能です。

＜　4.  our brain leaving a trace of the evolution　＞

Structure of our brain from the point of view of the evolution

The reason why the brain is controlled at multiple levels is related to the evolution of a living thing.

As shown in above picture, human beings' brain becomes large so that some functions are added, and its whole came to unite.

The fishes that have an old brain as the evolution react almost reflexively to sensory information.

In the reptiles, the sensory information came to unite a little, and then in old sort mammals, emotional control (anger, sympathy) was added on it.

In new sort mammals that a cerebral cortex developed, a large number of advanced processing fields combined together, and in human beings, thought and consciousness were added on it.

進化から見た脳の構造

脳の制御が重層的に行われている理由は生物の進化と関係しています。

図のように、人類の脳は機能が追加されるような形で大きくなり、それ全体が連合するようになりました。

進化的に古い脳を持つ魚類は、感覚情報にほとんど反射的に反応します

爬虫類では感覚情報の統合が少し進み、古い哺乳類では感情的な制御（怒り、共感）が加わります。

大脳皮質が発達した新哺乳類では、多数の高次の処理野が連合し、人間では思考や意識が加わります。

Point

This multistory feedback control was indispensable to the brain that enables quick accurate action.

However, there are two problems also in the system born by this evolution.

*The nerves to inform the early abnormalities (cancer, mental disease) in the brain or the internal organs are insufficient.

* As for being controlled automatically in the brain, conversely, for us, it is difficult to notice the mistake or the defect, and to correct it consciously.

This is similar about the information system of our society and organization.

By ourselves, we must cope with the expansion of community scale (globalization), and the progress of information media (the Internet).

Next time, we look at a wonder and a danger of the information processing of the brain.

ポイント

素早く適確な行動を可能にする脳に、この重層的な帰還制御は不可欠でした。

しかしこの進化で生まれたシステムにも問題はあります。

＊     進化途上において重要では無かったのか、内蔵や脳自身の初期異常（癌化、精神病）を知らせる神経が不足しています。

＊     脳や神経が自動処理していることは、逆に言えば、その間違いや欠陥に気づかず、また意識して修正することが困難だと言うことです。

このことは我々の社会や組織の情報システムについても同様です。

我々自身で社会規模の拡大（グローバル化など）、情報媒体（インターネットなど）の進歩に対応しなければならない。

次回は、脳の情報処理の不思議と危うさを見ます。
